Why "it works for me" doesn't prove anything
A site can be completely down for the rest of the world while still loading fine for you, because of a cached copy in your browser, a CDN edge node near you that hasn't caught the outage yet, or a DNS entry your device resolved minutes ago that's since changed. The reverse is also true — a site can be fully up while your own Wi-Fi, VPN, or ISP is having a bad moment. Neither situation is obvious from inside your own browser tab.
What the response actually tells you
- Connection refused or timeout — the server isn't responding at all. Either it's crashed, overloaded, or a network issue is blocking the request entirely.
- HTTP 5xx status code — the server is up and responding, but something on the backend is broken (database down, app crashed, out of memory).
- HTTP 4xx status code — the server is fine; the specific page or resource doesn't exist or you don't have access.
- Slow but successful response — technically "up," but if it's taking 10+ seconds, most visitors will experience it as down anyway and leave.
